UK's first brain tumour unit has opened in London.- 02 March 2011

The country's first brain tumour unit has opened in London.

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery new unit will assess cancer patients quicker leading to better survival rates.

Brain Cancer is the most common cancer killer of the under 40s and the biggest cancer killer of children in the UK. The disease claims around 3,000 lives a year. The unit which cost £1.3m unit will also conduct research into the disease. The medical team will work on clinical trials and critical research into tumours.

Patients at the hospital will benefit from cutting-edge treatment delivered by a specialised multi disciplinary team of doctors, nurses and therapists. In most cases brain cancer victims are treated alongside patients with other brain conditions such as multiple sclerosis. At this unique site, patients at the 12-bed unit will have access to the latest MRI scanning equipment and a ground breaking operating theatre; the BrainSuite neuronavigation system. The BrainSuite provides an angiography, MRI and surgical facility (a UK first and the first in the world for neuro use) which enables real time scanning of the brain and spine during surgery to enable greater accuracy and safer surgery.

Advanced forms of radiotherapy will also be available which allow for quicker, more targeted radiotherapy and fewer side effects. Equipment available include RapidArc as well as IMRT (intensity modulated radiotherapy) and standard radiotherapy.  There are plans for Proton Therapy to also be available (one of only two sites in the UK) to provide greater accuracy and lessen damage to surrounding tissues.
