Charlotte Gainsbourg, the daughter of French actor, singer-songwriter, and director Serge Gainsbourg and British actress and singer Jane Birkin, has released a new album co-written and produced by Beck called IRM.
Named after the French name for MRI, the magnetic resonance imaging scan, the album's mood reflects Charlotte's recent experiences. Charlotte suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2007 as a result of a water skiing accident. Her condition was evaluated with repeated MRI scans which inspired aspects of the new release.
"I remember lying in that thing and I thought of a song. It had to be put into song, because the sounds are quite disturbing. Rhythmically I found it very interesting, so I talked to Beck when we met. I played Beck the sound of the scanner - I'd found it on the internet - and said I wanted to incorporate it. I'll never forget that sound."
